A Handmade Home: Restyled Kitchen Cabinets

Hi friends! I've been working on these kitchen cabinets for quite some time now and it's been super fun! When we moved in our new apartment the kitchen was completely empty and we had to buy and build everything ourselves. In terms of money not the easiest task for two full-time students, so the project started with the cheapest white boring kitchen cabinets and a self-built white shelf between them.

I bought blackboard paint in dark brown, contact glue and a bunch of wood strips and sanded the cabinet doors thoroughly before I started. The boyfriend helped me with cutting the wood strips to size and I glued the pieces to the cabinet doors using contact glue. I'm totally in love with contact glue now, it worked so well (Thanks for the advice, dad!) and I could start painting immediately afterwards! I gave the doors three coats of blackboard paint each and let them dry completely before adding door knobs and hanging them.

I'm very pleased with the result. So much better than plain white cabinets! Because I left the rest of the cabinets white and painted only the doors, the cabinets don't seem heavy and dark and the kitchen keeps it's light and fresh look. Now all that's missing still is some chalk! I badly want to put those blackboard doors to the proof!

  1. I know the feeling. There really isn’t enough cash to go around to buy anything when you’re still a student. That being said, I really like how it turned out. The cabinet doors look great with the white splashback tiles. Definitely better than a boring all-white kitchen!

    1. Thanks, Camille! I'm glad you noticed the splashback tiles! I spent a weekend painting the brown/grey-ish tile grout lines white with a grout pen and it made a HUGE difference!

  2. You hand-painted the grouts? The patience and effort it must have taken to get it all done in a weekend. In my case, more on the patience part. I would probably get bored after a couple of hours and just come back to it after doing literally everything else around the loft. Haha!

    1. Haha, the patience was not the problem for me, more the back pains from the weird positions I had to take up for proper painting. But you're right, the grouts on the opposite wall did have to wait until everything else was done (you caught me there...) I'm glad I did this project, though :)

  4. I love the fruit display look on the kitchen counter. Another fun way to display fruit is in jar form, for example this home decor accessory is beautiful!
